2014 marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The Transatlantic Council of the Boy Scouts of America hosted a Jamboree on the landing beaches in Normandy for over 4500 Scouts and Scouters.
Troop 324 had the chance to see the Point du Hoc, gun emplacements in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer and some great museums that gave a very good impression of the landing of Allied forces in France. We also participated in the Council`s campfire on Omaha beach and other activities hosted by the Council and the French Government.
However, the success of Normandy is maybe not the “event” itself. It is the personal experiences that our Scouts and leaders had during the weekend. Some were touched by a private moment of walking through the American Cemetery, others by the campfire on the bluffs overlooking the beach, others by walking and exploring at Pointe du Hoc.
We had the chance to create experiences that touched our Scouts and helped us all to understand the magnitude of what happened on June 6, 1944, the sacrifices made to win peace and how this has influenced the world we live in today and that our Scouts will lead tomorrow.
